3G Development in China February 16 - 22

- At GSMA (Global System Mobile Association) Mobile World Congress 2009, formerly 3GSM World Congress), held in Barcelona on February 16-19, China Mobile revealed that its second phase TD-SCDMA network deployment is slated for completion in May or June, 2009, Sina News reported on February 20, adding that the third phase network construction. Meanwhile, the third phase network is set to complete the bids in the first half of 2009, slated for construction in July, 2009.

Also at the Congress, Datang Mobile and Potevio separately showcased mobile phone prototypes based on TD-LTE, a TDD (Time Division Duplex) version of LTE. The prototype showed in the Congress was developed by Potevio in September 2008. In an effort to push the development of LTE, Potevio stated that a commercial prototype is ready for the market in the third quarter of 2009 and its TD-LTE terminal will become commercially available in March 2010, according to another report by Sina News. Further details regarding Datang Mobile's rollouts for similar products, however, were yet to be disclosed.

Meanwhile, Guangdong Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile in Guangdong, revealed its plan to deploy 6,300 TD-SCDMA base stations in Shenzhen and Guangzhou during 2009. The total investment is valued at around six billion RMB (US$877.0 million; US$1 = 6.84 RMB), the South China Morning Post reported, quoting the general manager of Guangdong Mobile, Xu Long.

- China Telecom began accepting subscriptions for CDMA services in Beijing on February 18, the South China Morning Post reported. Aside from subscriptions via online channels, Beijing residents can now subscribe to China Telecom's mobile services at retail stores, choosing a mobile phone number with a prefix of 1890. China Telecom had approximately 28 million users as of the year-end 2008, aiming to add 35 million new subscribers in 2009 and 100 million within the next three years, according to the same source. The company reaffirms to launch 3G CDMA services on a small scale in March 2009.
